What Happens After the SATs?

The SATs are often treated like the “final hurdle” of Year 6, but what actually happens next? If you’re wondering what post-SATs life looks like for your child – here’s a quick guide.

What happens after the SATs

1. The Pressure Lifts

Once SATs are finished, teachers and children can breathe a little easier. There’s usually more time for creative activities, projects, and enrichment.

2. Secondary Prep Begins

Many schools use the final half-term for transition activities:

  • Writing letters to Year 7 teachers

  • Practice timetables

  • Talks about secondary school life

This can really help reduce nerves about the change.

3. SATs Results Arrive in July

You’ll receive your child’s SATs results before the end of the summer term. The scores will include:

  • A raw score

  • A scaled score (where 100 = expected standard)

  • Whether your child met, did not meet or was above the expected standard

4. More Fun in the Final Weeks

End-of-year trips, Year 6 leavers’ events, performances and sports days often take centre stage in the last few weeks. It’s a lovely way to celebrate the end of primary school.

5. What If the SATs Results Are Lower Than Expected?

Remember: SATs are a snapshot. They don’t define your child, nor do they capture their creativity, kindness, or potential. Secondary schools use a range of information to place children – not just SATs.
